Interest in Export Taillights? Please come in.
Hey guys/gals-
I have been working for months on these lenses and if their is enough support they may be produced, I currently have some prototype lenses being built that are replica's of these lenses. The reason they arent readily available is the tooling for making these lights are in the tens of thousands of dollars. Pricing is still undetermined until I have an idea on how many I want to run in one production run, and how many people would be interested and at what price. I dont think they will be avail for any less than $250. If people are interested, pass the word or start a post and have people email me at beatrice212121@aol.com and I will save their address for more info. This will also enable me to estimate how much interest their are in these and if it would be cost-efficient to mass produce these.
Thanks
Andy

Also, the GM products had to be tested for strength, impact and weather resistance, etc. so they are good quality. I would have to know that these are at least the same quality as the GM lenses before I shelled out money. I wouldn't want them to be paper thin or eaily broken or weathered.

I vote that you make the "candy-corns" but reverse the amber and the red.. i think would blend better into peoples cars and it would be more DOT legal -- target price should be in the $250 range.. what do altezas run $ wise? Also the quality needs to be good.
Could someone photoshop the red and amber switched?? here is a pic to work with..
Nice to see ya around Doc

The won't be DOT legal till they are approved, and the position of amber vs red is not a factor. Intensity, color temperature, surface finish, impact resistance, reflection/refraction index, I am sure (among others) are all considered.
Good luck, but personally, I'd try to locate the tooling at the Guide plant and just get them to do a special run - then you are sure you have your quality, and if labeled "off road only" DOT approval is not an issue.
Also, why not just use 1998-2002 lamps?
PS - now a complete rear fog lamp or from marker repeater lamps would be real cool... last I checked they are still available thru GMSPO, but a lot of wiring and mods need to be done to adapt to domestic cars...

Well.. i meant DOT compliant as far as the color layout.. im pretty sure that the tail lights are supposed to have red in the farthest outside position.. thats why they went to the new light patter in 97 and didnt just adopt the export version to the US as the new tri-color light..
and i agree.. "for off-road use only" is the way to go.. WAY WAY too expensive the other way
Besides if you change the color order then you might avoid a trademark problem with GM.. you know how they are

Good points guys, and all things that we had been playing with for months now. The off road use only is a for sure no brainer got that covered, and we had been playing with the ideas of the color layout, but still believe we can do the export color scheme and be ok. We may try what you suggested as well Steve, thats a different idea I like. The quality will also be a no brainer, tooling company in Detroit that works with the Big 3 will do the work, no fading cheap plastic here. Keep them coming guys, im going to add some names to my list and try to keep folks updated as we progress in this slow process!

Here is a quick chop...
I would rather see something like the passenger side tail light. All red, birds dont need orange in the tail lights, why should camaro's?
