If this will be your first time tinting, the back window is not the place to start. I would let a shop do it and deal with the hassle.

Like said, unless you're really qualified it will not be an easy task. But you can do it two ways, using one big sheet of tint, or two sections of tint. Get a pre-cut tint for the back window to make it easier though.

Expect bubbles at the top, just because of the bumps on the top of the window. Even shops can't get it perfect.

Ok im going to do it in two sections of tint I'm guessing use one of the defroster lines to put the two together so there won't be any extra lines.

What made it easy for my friend is that his came with no defroster, so his is perfect, haha.

The matrix at the top can be covered with vinyl, taped off and spray painted black or you can take a DA sander to it

a member onb here posted his process for doing his windows, including the rear. he bought all precut sheets instead of cutting his own. For the rear, he completely removed the hatch. i know he painted the dot matrix area or used vinyl, i forget. His job came out really good.

If you feel like searching it was in some tint/do it yourself type thread. he had quite a few pics. it was a NBM camaro

personally, having done side windows myself, and having seen the shop do my cars multiple times, i'd never even bother trying to do the rear. just to much of a hassle. I'd rather just pay to get it done.

^^^Yup, that was me. It's a fun project, but by no means easy. It took my friend an I about 3 hrs to do the back window out of one piece. We really took our time and worked slowly & carefully. The fit was perfect though. It's an ebay piece that comes pre-cut. I paid $27 for all 3 windows in 20%.

Tips - Paint the inside glass over the dot-matrix - use Johnsons Baby Shampoo and Distilled Water for lube - Use Bondo spreaders to press it down - Take your time - Use lots of lube - When you're done get some black 1/4" pinstripe from Autozone to hold all the edges down. With that big of a curve it's gonna want to lift. I just left the tape on there permanently, you never notice it's even there.

Pics - just cause I love whoring them around

Tint and Test Fit -

Did you lay the tint on the outside of the glass?

Yeah you have to lay it on the outside with the protective backing still on it. That way you can shape it to the curve without fighting the adhesive. Otherwise it will keep sticking down and I bet the tint would be ruined. It took us about 3 hrs or so (working very slowly & carefully) to get it into shape. Then when you stick it to the inside it's already formed to the shape of the glass. It makes the final install much easier.

You guys that are painting the dot matrix area, what are you doing about the tint meeting the paint? Are you simply getting as close as possible with the tint to the paint or?

Would it be better to do the tint first, get it as close as possible to the dot matrix, then painting? Just curious, I plan on doing this sometime soon.

My friend is a magician when it comes to tint. He's doing my back glass and door glasses next week. He uses one piece for the back glass and uses a heat gun to shrink fit it where the glass curves. He said it'll take him 1 hour to do the back glass right. The tint jobs he does are amazing. And when I just have to pay for the tint, pretty good deal I have.....

In illinois its about a 100$ for a full tint job minus windshield, for that price not really worth the hassle to do it yourself if you have similiar prices IMO, not to mention 99% of shops give out lifetime warranties.
