Default How can I do this to my wheels????

<img src="http://images.prosperpoint.com/images/2624/132200-1.jpg" alt=" - " />

I have these same wheels, and want to powdercoat them either black or dark gray (like the color of Z06 wheels). How can I remove the coating that is on them now, and polish the outer lip of them and about 3/8" onto the wheel itself? The wheel is now a metallic gray color, I assume it is powdercoated from the factory, correct? TIA, Shawn

Dude, if you really do have a set of the Pace car rims, and they are in good shape, you'd be better off selling them, or trading someone them for cash and a set of silver ones, i think that you would be ruining a set of good rims, that are actually worth money if someone would pay it, i would love to put the yellow ones on my black Z28

Spanky, that is probably baked on paint, not powdercoating, that came on your wheels from the factory.

For powdercoating, first the wheels have to be stripped of their existing coating, and then the powdercoating process begins.

That is done by using a powder that is attracted to electrostatic charges, that are put onto the target piece via an electrical device. This attracts the powder to the part.

One the part is coated in powder, its baked, until the powder melts, and then cures into a hard coat.

you can either have it done, at great expense, or you can spend about $150 to buy a cheap, secondhand kitchen oven, put it in your garage, and then go to www.eastwoodcompany.com and buy a small gun and the powder to do it yourself. Its only slightly more expensive, but the money you spend will give you equipment to do powdercoating in the future, not just get your wheels coated now.

The wheels in the pic are not mine, the ones I have are the regular painted ones. I want to remove the paint, polish the edges, then have the rest powdercoated black or dark gray. I guess I'll pick up a spare, and try on it first. Thanks, Shawn

I would buy one of those as a test piece. that way, you dont screw up a perfectly good spare wheel.

If you have pics of these on your car, I would like to see them. I have been toying with the idea of doing this myself for quite some time, using C5 wheels and having them powdercoated.

I have seen it done for a guy on different rims they acid dip the rims then light sanding, then power coat then mount the rim to a metal lath. A big metal lath and grind the power coat off then back to the power coater for the clear. But I would not use the wheel weights that mount to the lip of the rim.

Polydyn coatings can coat the wheels for you & do bad *** work. I'm not sure about polishing the lip but do a google search for polydyn in Houston TX & give em a call....they also cost stuff for NASA & do headers & all sorts of coatings.

Could be more. Shipping would get you as I believe he's in Tx. I'm guessing everything would be in the $650-750 range finished and back to you.

Gets expensive, huh?
