New mod idea.. hood light.. pics..
I wish the General had given us a proper under hood light but no luck on that one.. I have been working on a hardwired unit using a light housing found at a custom Rod shop (billet).. the problem is I was quite unhappy with seeing the power lead run to the light. the best way would be to run the wires inside the hood durring hood mfg.. I will keep working at a solution though
SO... I need a solution for now. Ive always hated how on cruise nite you cant see the engine once it gets dark so here is what I did...
small plastic battery powered florescent light. I found these at Home Depot for three for $6 on sale.. not a bad deal, they run on 4 AA batterys and they do have a provision for an AC adaptor but then there is that wire problem again.. note the fuzzy sided of the velcro I attached to the light..

Apply some good velcro (the plastic hook side) to the area indicated.. this is a good spot as the light will not be noticable (especially with my hood cable mod) but will lite the engine evenly.

Now you can mount the light easily.. I figure it will be good for cruise nights or if I need to check something on the engine at night..

NOTE: you CAN NOT close the hood with the light installed.. I keep the light in my glove box for when I need it.. cost of mod was about $2.50
The light isnt quite as bright as I would like but its enough.. Also since the light is florescent its a tad blue.. I wonder how tinting the lense would look??
whatcha think?

Re: New mod idea.. hood light.. pics..
Nice idea.
If you are running into problems with the hood light because of wires, why not make a fender light or a under cowl light?
I know you can hide wires well, and I bet just under the plastic cowl would act similarly to a hood light.

You would also most likely see the light source.. this give a pretty cool effect over the entire engine area (even the front hood latch area while the light source stays completly hidden (unless you look)..
Like I said.. this is a good "for now" mod.. details will be released when I perfect the hardwired billet light mod
A mod (or two) a week is all we ask...

I don't know about you Camaro guys but I have a WS6 with a factory GM hoodlight from a C5 that is mounted dead center and the wiring is completely hidden inside the hood. At night it lights up the engine bay like it was daytime due to it's excellent mounting location. No problem closing the hood either. Maybe you could customize it to fit the Z hood. Just a thought! You can see mine through link in sig below.

Oh, I didnt buy the billet hood light yet.. just found it.. its $70! So I want to solve the wiring part first.. but I like the GM one also..

Mine is a factory Corvette underhood lamp that I ordered through GM and installed myself. The part numbers are as follows:
GM underhood lamp........10203566
lamp harness connector...12101899
These are Canadian p/n's and may not crossover to US dealers. If so just order it for a C5 Corvete and your GM parts dealer will take care of it.
The wiring exits way down at the base of the hood through a factory hole on the driver's side. I covered that short section with black split loom cover for that factory appearance look. I then slipped the wires into the large wiring conduit that runs down the fender well all the way to the
remote jump start terminal where it hooks up. I have an autotap with blade terminals on the jumpstart terminal. It bolts right on to the jump terminal and allows for 3 additional power sources. The wiring is completely hidden and the light looks factory. In complete darkness, it lights up every inch of the engine bay. Especially awesome when your parked with a bunch of enthusiasts in a dimly lit lot and want to show off some mods.
LMK, if you want some better pics of the wiring. I can't host them but I will be more than happy to email you them.

Re: New mod idea.. hood light.. pics..
I don't remember where I saw this, installuniversity maybe, but there is a document online about installing a late model GM truck under-hood light on our cars. It's a very detailed and simple how-to with good pics. The install looks and functions as though stock.

Re: New mod idea.. hood light.. pics..
what about putting lights back behind the motor on the wall??? Then the wires would be hard to see. And then have the light the same way you have yours and have front and rear lighting. Maybe have a switch under the dash to control the other ones.
