I droppped off several nuts/bolts/washers at a chrome shop. I picked them up today and have a few questions

1) Anyone ever tried to chrome some of the engine compartment nuts/bolts/washers? The chromer had troubles with several, including those that hold the lower airbox down. they have a cruddy yellow coating on them, though the head of the bolt came out okay. The washer looks like it's tarnished, but it's not. Anyone know the cause or solution?

2) Can I buff these with anything to help get out that "tarnished" look? What should I buff any of these with?

3) Several of the pieces came back witha black crud stuck to the chrome. How do I safely get that off without ruining the chrome? My fingernails aren't getting it done.

Most of the aftermarket nut and bolts came out okay (like for the engine plaque and the STB), but the factory stuff wasn't so hot. I'll try and get pics, but my camera doesn't take good pics.

Thanks for any thoughts/advice

This shot shows the "tarnished" look I spoke of on the washer. The bolt shows some of the black gunk inside the head.

This one shows, in this bad photo, the look of the yellow crub on the chrome.

Yea looks like a lack of detailed prep and polish between each plate (copper, nickle, and chrome)...and the first one looks like the copper layer showing through....the second, I don't know, depending on how much you paid for the job, I would bitch an equal amount....he should re-plate what is not satisfactory to you.

Steve, do you have any thoughts?

I don't know if some of the problems are because the washers are inseparable from the bolt.
