Default Shortening a4 shifter

Does anyone know why we can only shorten an a4 shifter by an inch max? What stops us from being able to go more? Thanks in advance!

I dunno! Good question. I've done it to my V6 Bird and was thinking about going real short on my Trans Am when I get around to doing it.

Edit: Maybe it has to do with the diameter of the inside plastic shaft. You might NEED to have it narrower to work with the factory shift ****. I have the B&M adapter with a Hurst t-handle to I'm sure if you go that route it shouldn't matter in the least.

I believe theres a spring inside the shaft that keeps the shifter in whatever gear is selected around 1.25" down

Trew-dat, ...
You'd have to dis-assemble the shaft & it's innards.
Don't think that'd be wise.

Want one already cut 1"?
I've got one for sale for $35 shipped in the US48.
