Polishing and powder coating calipers
I am planning on polishing my calipers this weekend and then applying a gloss clear powder coat to them. Wanted to know how the powder coat will do on calipers? Do they get to hot?
Thanks,
Brian

Re: Polishing and powder coating calipers
thanks blown346...
I wanted to show my polished calipers off while at the same time protecting the polished look. As far as I know there are no high temp clear coat anythings. Any ideas?

I've seen them painted with body-color standard automotive paint successfully. As long as you're not running the Rolex 24, you'll be fine with car paint, caliper paint, engine paint, etc. I've felt the calipers after a lot of braking and they were no hotter than a black hood on a sunny summer day at noon so automotive colors work too. Maybe just coat them with Duplicolor high temp clearcoat.

Re: Polishing and powder coating calipers
I had my rear calipers and hangers painted but over time the paint got chips and started to look less than fresh.
This time I pulled it all apart. I had the casting marks removed from the calipers and hangers then had them powder coated (Calipers black and hangers darg grey metallic).. The powder paint will hold up MUCH better than paint and it will immune from damage by brake fluid.
Heat is not an issue.. many companies (Brembo, Baer, etc) use powder paint on their performance calipers and the Z06 comes with powder painted calipers from the factory.

Re: Polishing and powder coating calipers
Thanks for the advice all! I'll go ahead and clear coat powder coat them. Does anyone know if I'll need a caliper overhaul kit after taking them apart or can I salvage the caliper seals? Mitchntx, you out there?

Re: Polishing and powder coating calipers
Powder coating is the definite route to go on calipers. We do a lot of this work here at SM Polishing and have never gotten a complaint about it. High temp. engine paint or caliper paint both work good too. The major advantages of powder coating is it's ability to withstand very high temperatures and scratch resistance. Let me know if you have any questions.

Pics in the Sig.
Unless you like doing it yourself, at $200 for all four calipers polished/powdercoated, it's tough to beat.
I haven't clear coated the polished calipers, they hold up surprising well. I'm at a month now and they look just like they did when they were first done. It's cool, the calipers and brackets wipe clean like new and must repel dust or something.

I would have thought that brake heat would tarnish or bake crud into them. BTW, nice job, they look awesome.

Re: Polishing and powder coating calipers
Teri those look good. What is the 6666 all about? Is that the number of SS you got in production or something?
Vector I haven't done anything to them and they look like new. I've driven in the rain got them muddy a little and braked a fair amount with no affects so far. I guess the polished surface is so smooth nothing can stick to it. Waterspots wipe right off too, it's cool.
