Default Paint bubbling on roof of car...

The paint on the roof of my 00Z is bubbling in spots. Along the sides of the roof and the bottom of the "B" pillar on both sides. The spots are about the size of a pencil and all in a row. Its looks strange. It is the original paint.

Anybody else seen this??

This happened on mine too. No idea what causes it. The body shop at the dealer where I bought the car wet-sanded them out for me. The spots they worked on are smooth now. There are still a couple other places they need to hit though.

There is a guy who posts on LS1.COM (not sure if he posts here) named ManuZ28 and he had the same problem with his red SS. It was so bad, he successfully got the dealer to agree to replace the whole roof and paint it. You might want to try to contact him to see if you had the same situation as he did.

Mine is doing it. I have a '00 Z-28. It's like the epoxy resin is leaking out or something. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[barf]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_barf.gif" />

Sounds like there was contamination in the paint, I believe G.M. had a vendor do the painting on this part. There's been enough of this problem to where you might get it fixed under warranty, good luck.

Buddy of mine has a Black 99 Z and his is bubbling along the drip rails on the roof as well. Plus a couple other spots as well around the fenders I think he said.

What color is everyone else cars that are having this problem and are most others having it just stay in the roof area?

THe roof is SMC... kind of like fiberglass. There is a reaction of the SMC with the adhesive that bonds it to the steel roof structure.(yes the roof is glued on!!!) That is why it is usually in a line, and usually at the bottom and the top center. There is no fix for this except for a new roof panel, and it is covered under warranty.

Hard-top cars are prone to this. My 2000 Z28 had bubbles around the edges of the roof and in the middle where the zig-zag of adhesive is. It seems the adhesive was possibly made improperly and being that the sheet molded compound is porous it eventually has a negative reation with the paint and causes it to bubble. I took my car to the dealership and they only opted to sand it down and paint it. Well 3 months later the bubbling is back in full force. Fortunately for any 1999-2002 F-body owner, GM has finally figured out there is a problem and issued a TSB on 2/14/2003. TSB#03-08-98-001 Bubbles in the paint around the perimeter of the roof (replace roof). I'm taking my car in this summer, and this time it is going to get fixed right.

No. The TSB will repair the problem for free only if you are in warranty. Otherwiseyou have to pay for the repair.

As previously mentioned, the paint is contaminated. To my knowledge, the only fix is a new roof. If you are still under warranty, the dealer should replace it for you. I had to have mine replaced about a month ago.

BLACK 00Z, What dealer did the work and were you
satisfied with the work done? I need to get mycar
fixed, but I want to take it to a good dealer body
shop. They are many "hack" dealer body shop around town and I want to avoid them!

I went to Munday Chevrolet. So far, so good, though they took forever.
