Default Im thinking about a 3" SS hood but...

My main reason for another hood is weight reduction. I hate the idea of getting rid of my stock SS hood because I love it! But weight loss is the idea so...I like the VFN 3" SS hood BUT pin on or bolt on is the question. Only 14lbs for pin on is bad *** but damn, what a PITA it would be huh?! Hmmmm?

I bought the bolt on for that reason. I didn't want to deal with removing a pin-on by myself.

I really like that. Anymore pics like from the side?

Im thinking that seting up the pin on hood will just be a hassle also.
So what about some guys having to use pins along with their hood latch?

Theres a bolt on thats 25lbs and the pin on is 14lbs. I may just avoid the hassle and go with the bolt on. Ill still shave 25lbs.

i wouldnt bother with the pin on, to much of a pita trying to take it off yourself. i went with the bolt on also.

Since you have to pin a bolt on anyways, just go with the pin on. Saves a ton of weight, is cheaper, allows more room to work on your engine, and really can be put anywhere once you take it off. Love mine.

Thats what I was wondering! These lightweight hoods need a couple pins anyway?!
How hard is seting up the pins? It looks like a pita.
Also how hard could it possibly be to take off a freakin 14lb hood? lol Seriously im not being a smart ***. It looks like it can just be picked off the car by the scoop. Yes?

When your car already has an OEM SS hood you don't change hoods for weight reduction, you do it for looks. I personally like the looks so you can see why I'll be keeping mine for a long time. The amount of weight lost from a hood swap will not be felt on a street car.

OEM SLP SS hood is heavy for a fiberglass hood..It actually weighs more than the stock Z28 hood..

Stats...stock ss hood 51lbs vs pin on VFN 3" ss 14lbs = 37lb loss not counting the weight of stock hardware and hood latch.
I agree with you that the stock hood looks mint but loosing at least 37lbs from a hood swap is freakin HUGE and probably one of the biggest weight reduction mods you can do. Thats just the thing with weight reduction...you cant say ehh, that one part alone isnt worth it because you take a little here and take a little there and it all adds up. It depends on what your thing is.
All I know is I took an honest 200lbs of free weight out of the car recently and the difference is huge on my street car. Lets just say I have been bitten by the weight reduction bug and I realise how much of a difference weight really makes

First off 3" SS hoods look fully retarted and thats not in a good way. If you want an SS, get a VFN Fiberglass oem looking SS.

IF you want the 3" look, and possibly for future clearence needs, get a cowl. Much cleaner and cooler looking.

Also if you want the "Pin on" version in my opinion you should have an fire extinguisher in the car at all times just in case. Especially with Nitrous.

your full of **** and vinegar today huh?

IDK why you think it looks so bad. I would have mine painted pewter like the rest of the car. Theres a pic around here of of pewter one somewhere and I think it looks pretty good

What I can say it looks rice. IMO if your runnin a carb set up and need the hood clearence, it makes sense. I am a less is more kind of person. Extra large SS hoods scoops never sat well with me but again it's your car. IMO I think you can go light and do a pin on if your willing to do the work and deal with the head aches but have a normal sized SS scoop and get the best of both worlds.

Since you have a SS hood, I figure most would like the change to something like a Cowl or Ultra Z

I have the same dilemma, I really think the 3" is too high myself but I do like the look of the older SS hood but have only seen one on a 98 or later SS. I posted a thread asking if anyone knew where to find it but no one could come up with an answer so I am still hunting for a hood. In the end I may just keep the OEM hood since I do like it too.
