Default my experience cutting a4 shifter

well I was attempting to cut my stock shifter, and I messed up. i was scared to cut past the point where the plastic piece changes diameter, but i did it anyway. a few hours with a tiny dremel, my adapter, a hurst t handle, and a grand prix boot, and Im satisfied!

heres before i got it how i wanted

it was about an inch higher.

Nice, I've got a similar set up in my car, Hurst T and an 04 Impala boot, just mine's not shortened.

I'll warn you, if you park in the sun a lot that handle will get freakin hot. I've burned my hand on mine before. I think I'm switching mine for a white ball soon.

There are adapters out there that make it so you push the whole **** down.

I did not know that. That's pretty nifty.

Looks awesome! I have a shifter from a 78 firebird and I'd like to shorten it or put a boot on it sometime soon.

Thanks! If I had a better dremel I could have kept shortening, but I think it's just right how it is!

Bumping this thread.

I shortened my shifter and the spring mechanism and everything was working well. As soon as I put the shift plate on however, the spring mechanism is such that I physically have to pull hard up on the shift ****. With the shift plate off, you press down on the aftermarket shift **** to shift, and then it automatically just pops up. There's nothing obstructing the spring mechanism either when the shift plate goes on.

Did you also install a leather shift boot? You might need to loosen the screws mounting the plate then. Just need it barely snug, not tight. Also, ditch the black plastic sliders if you have a leather shift boot. And make sure the shifter goes through the loop of the sliding mechanism. I didn't have a problem with button sticking down, but the mechanism made moving the shifter too stiff.

So you only used the sliding mechanism that shows what gear you are in and ditched the rest of the sliding plates? That slider doesn't have support on the non indicator side which was my concern. I tried it without the boot and had the same problem. I'll loosen the 4 screws and see if it resolves it.
