Default Bought a Porter Cable...Now I need pads.

Finally found a Porter Cable locally.

I tried using the supplied pad as a practice run....It works but it isn't working well enough for me.

Just wondering if the experts here could recommend some pads for me? I need something with some cut as I have BAD swirls. I've been on all the detailing sites but all the numbers and colors mean nothing to me...So please help a noob out.

A lot of people say the lake country flat pads are a lot better than the ccs pads. But if that's not cutting it grab some microfiber pads. Also, all this information should be in the "ask a professional detailer" thread.

good advice dabest09...I bought my PC from geeks and they also supplied me with the pads after talking with other members on this site. They work great.

I've been using the Lake County CCS pads on my car and they work great. This is because I've got tried and true cutting compounds too though.

I was going to use 3M Rubbing Compound. My truck is black and has years worth of swirls on it.

That stuff is crap, don't skimp on wax when you just paid $120 or more for a buffer

I also have some Meguiars Ultimate Compound. Is that good enough?

Typical compounds you'll see recommended are Meguiars 105 and 205, Meguiars Swirl Remover 2.0, Mezerna SIP, Adams, etc. The ultimate compound is alright if you have really light defects, or want to hand polish, but there are definitely better options for machine polishing. I've used the ultimate compound before, but wasn't as impressed as I was with their higher grade compounds.

Our local autozone's started carrying Meg 105/205 recently. I used to have to go to a special supplier in town to get some.

As far as waxes, a lot of guys will recommend Blackfire Wet Diamond sealant, does wonders on black vehicles. I used Meguiars 21 synthetic paint sealant the first time I detailed my car, now I just use Meguairs Deep Crystal Carnuba wax for a fresh coat every month or two. The meguairs deep crystal is cheap, off the shelf from autozone, but it works for what I use it for.

M105/205, best bang for the buck, and also most auto parts stores carry it now, and the ask a pro detailer thread should answer any questions you ever have about detailing

The 3M stuff is garbage yes....but it also is not wax.

Lake Country flat pads: Orange, white, black for correction. Red or blue for applying sealants/waxes.

Heavy cutting: meguiars MF cutting discs.

Get 5.5" pads and get the Mirka backing plate Part Number:
916SGV (the one with all the vent holes in it). Can be bought at buffdaddy.com

Am I doing it right?

Now keep in mind I did this with the supplied pad in the box with the Porter Cable. I'm impatient and wanted something to do. I ordered my LC pads a day ago.

you would want to use something lighter in cutting power before the wax... pre wax cleaner, paint cleanser, swirl remover, etc etc

once you get real pads you will able to do a lot more
