Painting Headers on Car?
I've been doing some cleaning up under the engine bay the past couple of days, I already did the "wire" mod and I'm working on relocating the fuel lines (LT1). My headers are rusty and not that attractive to the eye.
Has anybody painted your headers while there on the car? Is there a brush on header paint to prevent over spray?
Taking the headers out just seems like a long and dreaded process.

i'm a parts guy at advance auto and in our paint section there is no brushable exhaust paint, its all aerosol cans. i doubt its in a brush form because that would leave unsightly streaks in the finish. just my quick 2cents.

id assume you might be able to remove the plugs and wires and wedge something behind the headers so you dont overspray on the block. then do alot of taping around the engine bay. if youre just looking to make it look good and not prevent the rust, that should work. you might not be able to get the backside of the headers, but nobody will see that part anyways

Thanks ! That's exactly what I'm looking for. It's a reasonable price too. I'll have to give it a try.
I figured if worse comes to worse I would just spray them just didn't want to risk the chance of getting over spray on something if I could avoid it by brushing the paint on.
Do you think that 8oz of paint would be enough or would I need more?

Painted headers don't look cheesy, improperly painted headers look cheesy. I've sprayed two sets on two of my TA's and they came out flawless each time, and held up very damn well.
The problem I see with doing them ON the car, is that you can't do the proper prep work. If they're rusting, they need to be brought back down to the bare metal (wire wheel would work) and then a rust neutralizer needs to be applied. Then you can worry about the coating. If you just cover it up, it's either gonna flake off, or the rust will just eat it's way through again.
If you have a free weekend, take them off and do it. It'll probably be a pain in the *** your first time, but you'll never fear removing headers again lol. Good luck!
