spray the entire thing with a good degreaser (i use Mequiars APC), agitate the bad spots with a brush, pressure wash clean, let the car idle for 10 minutes or so, drink a beer.

I've read those same things, but it's always seemed like more of a theoretical problem. I've done the degreaser/scrub/spray thing lots of times without any problems. Can you screw something up? Theoretically, yes. But I'm going to speculate that the odds are pretty small.

dont focus direct water spray on alt for a long period of time and you are fine. this is how i have been detailing cars for the past 2 years. usually doing 1-2 cars/trucks per day

i dont pressure wash, i just get a good bucket of dish soapy water
with a good scrub brush and hose the engine down and whatever else
you want cleaning, scrub it all down, and hose it off... can even use
"gunk" engine cleaner, dont focus the water spray on the fuse boxes
or pcm area...or cover them up with plastic bags.

Seems like every time I would clean my engine bay, my alt would get wet and overcharge... peg out the voltage gauge. Ended up blowing both headlights once, setting off dash lights and all kinds of crap. After a couple days it'd dry and be fine again..

Since then I've gotten a new alt, but haven't tried it again yet. Just about scared to lol.

I used the typical engine degreaser, and a small tootbrush for the nook and cranny. Rinse it with mist or light spray of water.
