if your car has radio controls the clock spring is wired for them. You could make them work with some wire diagrams. I saw a cobalt forum thread where a guy did that custom using buttons on both sides of the c6 wheel. I cant find it now.

negative, the can bus is the problem, not the wiring itself... cobalt has canbus wiring, f-body dosent

I have a 2007 2500hd single stage unit on the way to test fit. I also came across a gto swap page and he re-drilled holes in the igniter cover plate to get the gto igniter and bag to work on his wheel. Here is a link. Also you would need to change out the airbag connector at the clock spring (I am not implying anyone try this and you do so at your own risk!)

Thats kinda sketchy, im not to big on non direct swap things such as that. Everywhere hes cut is a point for failure and loss of steering isnt gonna end well if your on the highway (or any speed for that matter). The only reason I was comfortable with what I did is because the piece was designed to work in f-body columns and shared the same dimensions. The hacking up and welding route is kinda scary when you think about it.

Not really, people weld engine blocks up all time as well as rebuilt cars that last for decades.

I posted the information for the airbag portion, hell I wouldnt weld any part of a steering shaft even if it would hold up. I also have the whole upper shaft to use.

I'm going to get an airbag from the junkyard but I'm not worried about it working. Its no different than if I were to put an aftermarket wheel in it. Is there a way to get the actual airbag out and without damaging the shell?

depends in the airbag unit. The vette units come apart pretty easy, just take it slow and keep it away from your face.

here is my progress as of today (If you mess with your SIR system you do so at your own risk. Don't hurt yourself and say some guy in the interwebs did it so it must be legit!)

I made some head way today. I got the van airbag pulled apart. Drilled new hole in the backing plate for the vette unit and test fit it in the blown unit. I think this will do. The connector is similar to the Jimmy's so I might be able to use it. Here are some test shots of the van unit in various stages of undress and change over. I clamped the backing plate from the van unit to the vette one and marked the new holes and drilled them out.

holes drilled and assembled to the vette unit.

fitted in the airbag cover. If its too tight I can use the gto igniter and airbag. Luckily the van and gto bags run about $50 shipped. I don't mind spending that for research and proper fit. You can see the plate from the van unit I used as a template.

The single stage bag came from a 2007 express van. I put the two igniter bag units side by side for comparison. They are close enough. I did put two long zip zips around the unit to keep it from spreading out on insertion. The vette unit actually has a wrap around it.

Putting the unit in the cover was not bad. I used the end handle of a screw driver to push the corners in and pull the rubber over the tabs. Just took my time and it went in fine.

Can we make this a sticky and is it worthy. Remember this is what I did, not you. You go F#ucking around with your SIR system and get a face full of bag, NOT MY FAULT. (Public service announcement)

mcdonald77 you say on your writeup on s10, any car with a compatible wheel will have the correct shaft, as long as it is a tilt column. Your sure on that? I may hit a yard and see what I can dig up.
Also are you confident that your bag will deploy in a crash. I know you said your not responsible. But in your own vehicle are you confident in your work. I think it'd be badass to have a fully functional C6 wheel.

BTW. That looks 100x better than the stock wheel in your Jimmy.

As long as its the old tilt style like the Vette, 01-2010 Grand Prix, 2000-2010 Bonneville ect. The steering shaft from a Cobalt, G6, HHR, G5, Solstice, Sky, Aura will NOT work as they are the new import type lift up/down columns.

....also, you can make the Can bus switches work if you converted the wiring in your car to a ISIS wire harness . Theres no cheap, easy or backdoor ways to pull the can bus stuff off in older cars, is what it is.

thanks for answering this. He is correct, you'd have to find the old tilt style. I think the vans should still have them, don't quote me.
