I still don't get why GM never updated the steering wheel in these cars to begin with, they did it in 98 on the Silverado's, Tahoes and Suburbans. When they went to the second generation bags in 98 they shrunk the center of the steering wheel so it wasn't so fugly.

yessir, ill make up a parts list tomorrow and post it. Oh and to answer an earlier question the wheels are the same diameter.

One other thing i forgot to mention... its not nessecary but ittl certainly make things easier if you delete your VAT system

They did update them. Sort of. 93-99 Camaros had one wheel, then in 2000 I think it was they changed it to something a little different (still big and ugly, I almost prefer the older wheel actually). Same time they changed the stock wheels from 5 spokes to snowflakes (another "why" move IMO).

Turn Signal Switch (because while you got it appart you might as well replace this god awful thing too.
A compatible steering wheel.

based on what i can see in these pics it dosent look like the camaro wheel is the same setup. I'd say props to anyone if they try it but... to me it looks like it wont work

What turn signal switch can you replace it with however? Part of the reason for it being so clunky is the really old school design with all the mechanical linkage to operate the actual switches further down. Really I have no idea why they did that instead of just mounting the actual switches up at the base of the stalk like they do now.

not sure, i just replaced the actual cam, not the lever itself. Seeing the way its set up it would probably be pretty hard to make something else work. In theory though any that came of a Saginaw steering column would work though since they all use roughly the same parts. That being said im not sure if anyone offers a more stylish one or not.

Yeah that's why I wondered about doing a whole column swap, if that was possible or not. Downside is the newer columns also have a second stalk because the headlight control is on the left stalk where the current cruise is at, then the right stalk has cruise I think is how it is set up. Not sure if the hazard switch in on there at all either. Not to mention that those switches may be can-bus connected also.

On the other hand my Trailblazer has the exact same switch layout as the 4th gen, but a more modern look and feel, but that's also a truck column so it is more bulky. It could be can-bus also.

The other issue wiring aside is the length.

yea hear that, i played around with that idea for a bit too but never got too far with it. I actually looked at swapping in the whole c6 column but the fact it dosent have a traditional keyhole would have made it impossible. My t/a dosent have cruise control anymore so really wiper motors and turn signal are all i have on my stalk. Come to think of it though i do have a newer style switch out of one of the cobalt columns i took appart. May play around with it and see if i can make something work.

Hmmm, I like where this discussion is going. Maybe I should look more into researching CAN Bus electrical systems and seeing what all can be done with them. I would LOVE to find a way to update a number of the F-body interior components/electrical systems

Unless you were adopting the entire electrical system, I would save yourself the hassle and frustration. Can bus is not cross compatible with traditional electrical systems.

Awesome job on the c6 wheel, im happy it all worked out after all that work. Cant wait to see it in the car.

I find your project very interesting. I've always hated the stock Trans Am wheel design. I think the rest of the interior has aged pretty well, design wise. It's not flashy, but it's functional. I had a 1992 Bonneville SSEi which used the same wheel found in the 1993-7 cars. I think this one looked much nicer, but the buttons were less ergonomic due to their distance from one's thumb. Even Lotus sourced this same steering wheel for their Esprit.



I've always referred to the wheel in my Trans Am as "the goat turd steering wheel," as the buttons look like turds as they're being squeezed out of a goat's butt (the soft spoke of the steering wheel being the rectum, as it were). If you've ever been to a petting zoo, it's hard not to see this. Aside from that, the airbag is huge and bulbous, and the rim is too thin, especially at the top.



I've sampled many a wheel as a potential replacement, and my current favorite is the non-SRT MOPAR steering wheel used in just about everything from the Charger to the Town & Country. There is a newer media-friendly MOPAR steering wheel that just came out, but it's spokes are too fat and I can't use all the buttons anyway. The main thing I like about this wheel is that its cross section (if you sawed through the wheel) is perfectly round and feels good in my hands. It seems, based on your work merely swapping similar era GM wheels, that going to another brand would be a tremendous undertaking. Still, I'd prefer to keep an airbag and the redundant stereo controls over a racing wheel.

Nope... dont even waste your time trying lol, that was my first mistake... it takes 5 mins to take it outta the car, much easier to works with once its out and for some of the steps you'd have to have it out just for the ability to get to certain parts.

might not be as impossible as you think. Dunno about newer chryslers but i know theres a few mid 90s chrysler vehicles that use the Saginaw columns like our cars... Havent dove deep into what that includes but i did read that in some of my research.

I believe the malibu wheel is similar to the C6 wheel. If anyone does this they may want to look into the malibu wheel as it may be cheaper to source.
