Problems with Granatelli 200mph speedo
Dont know if this goes here but here goes. About a year ago I picked up a Granatelli 200mph speedo. Thing worked great and was accurate. About 6 months ago when the car was cold and especially at night the speedo needle would hang at about 35-40mph. Even when I would accelorate it wouldnt move. Just stay there till I shut off the car. Then after a little while longer I noticed it acting spiratically. Needle jumping around, I would accelorate and it would move slow then snap to the right speed. After dealing with that it just went away. No problems at all. About a week ago I get in the car, turn the accy power on (key on possition) and the needles go to do thier sweep like normal and the speedo needle goes to about 90mph and then drops to 70mph and sticks there. Even after I start the car it stays at 70mph. In the past when it would do its sweep it would go all the way to about 160 or better and then fall to zero. Now it just sticks at 70.
Anyone have any clues? I put this here since this mod seems to be more of an "appearence mod".

Not sure if this will help but when I did my gauges it did this exact same thing we found that the needle was pushed it to far causing this probem.
So all we did was back it up a tad and all has worked well for a year now

I haven't had any problems like this with my Granatelli conversion, but Sean's suggestion sounds like a logical thing to try...the only thing that sounds strange to me is that GMS replaces the entire overlay in one piece, not with individual gauge sections, so the chance of a high spot in the speedo section of the overlay interfering with the needle's movement in certain areas seems remote...at least to me.

If your gauges sweep when you turn on your car, then your battery may be going. (Its one of the signs) The stock unit does not do that so I wouldnt think it was normal for the Granatelli unit either.

I bet if you change the battery it won't do the sweep anymore. Mine never did that until i left my high fans on waaaay to long day, when i went to start it up it did the sweep for the first time ever. BTW, where can one get this 200mph conversion, i'm intrested.

The 200mph Granatelli speedo does the "Corvette" sweep, up to about 110 mph or so.
It is programmed to do this. It in no way is trying to tell you your battery is going dead. Mine has done this from the first day I put it in, and I had a brand new battery at the time.
Mine also "jumps" at about 45-55 mph sometimes... Sometimes as low as 40.
It's about a year old now.
Sounds like a common problem with these units.
I wonder what Granatelli has to say about it?

I have already contacted grannatelli about this. And the attitude of the guy I talked to is "send it to us, if its a calibration problem, we will fix it. If not its your dime." I am going to call them back today and let them know that this seems to be a common problem with this speedo and see if it changes the tune there.

I agree. It is a common problem.
I think there are more speedos out there that do stick than those that don't.

They do too have an LT1 model, only the 97 though. The 97 clusters we didgital. However the 97 cluster will not do the sweep like the 98+ models, because it is something in the cluster for programming that the 98+ has that the 97 don't.....FYI the 97 cluster will swap into your 94, as the 97 did into my 93, which allowed me to have the 200mph cluster. The LS1 cluster will not work in the LS1, to my knowledge, however I know from my car the 97 cluster will work in the prior LT1 years, I've personally done it in a 95, 93, and 94....
