Default Just For Fun... 96 LED License Plate Light

Now that I’m back in a F-body, I knew it was just a matter of time before I got to tinker in making my own LED boards again. LEDs have come a long way since last time I made one, but surprisingly the typical 5mm LEDs haven’t really been improved too much. I considered upping my game and do some 1/2w or 1w LEDs or SMDs, but figured I’d start off small. Also running those and depending on how I wired them, may require a heatsink.

There's really no point to this thread, just wanted to share my bright *** license plate light. For anyone curious, there are 96 white 16,000mcd flat-head LEDs. I wired 3 in series and 4 sets of those to each resistor. I have a few voltage drivers laying around, may end up wiring one on them to keep a constant voltage.

Thanks! It's a pretty pointless project, but I love LEDs. I completely forgot how time consuming this stuff was to do. May need to figure out an alternative way to still use LEDs when I illuminate the front plate bird.

And I thought the one I made with 6 was to bright, figured I didn't need to advertise my license plate that much haha. Great work.

Haha, I didn't think about that. When I install my back up camera, I bet it'll definitely help!

Any reason why you used so many? Or just for the hell of it and boredom?

Here's some old threads where I started making my own plate light for my old Firehawk. I guess I failed on this one since "only" 96 LEDs. The LEDs I used for this plate are brighter and have a better spread though.

I have that exact same license plate on my Formula. I had to wait 3 years for it to be available.

I see you sold it already, but just an fyi....in Pa its illegal to have a "rear facing white light". Maybe other states too. Even tho this is technically a tag light, it could be just enough of a reason for someone to get pulled over.
I got stopped one night in my work truck for a small spotlight on my rear bumper that I use to help see while backing up. I forgot and left it on driving down the rd. It was no where near as bright as your LEDs. Guess it depends if the cop wants to be a du... or not.

I've ran a plate light similar on my old hawk for 5-6yrs and then on this one for 1.5yrs without issue. Technically this isn't a "rear facing white light", it's pointing down so shouldn't be illegal IMO. Not everyone wants their plate to be seen so easily though, lol.

I actually ran XTINCT on my hawk. Then gave up that plate for LS2SSUV when I had a TBSS. When I sold it and got a 05 GTO, I got it back. Apparently in Louisiana you keep ownership of a personal plate for a few years. After the GTO it went on a Raptor and still applied. At some point I discovered EXTINCT was finally available so I submitted for that one. Now XTINCT plate hangs on my wall in the shop along with LS2SSUV and FIDDY

If you ever drop that plate let me know, I'm currently running XTINCT 1 on my Firehawk

Will do, with owning a C5 it doesn't really apply like it use to but can't think of another plate that fits it. BTW, my previous plate XTINCT may be available, seems like I only keep possession of it for 2-3yrs and it's been about that long since I got the new one..

For kicks, post a rear shot of your car if you can.
