Tire care 101

Tire care 101
Looks like some of you guys have questions about tires, browning, cleaning and protectants. Maybe this can solve some of the mystery.
There are two elements, which attack the rubber of tires, UV rays and the ozone. Both attack in one general sense, they reduce the flexibility of the rubber, which causes dry rot and other problems. Ever notice how your tires become lighter with age? It’s the carbon black that is used during the manufacturing process, as the tire dissipates heat from general use the carbon is consumed, creating the grayish appearance. Also, have you ever noticed how your tires turn brown? That is actually a good thing in regards to protection but most detailers don’t want the hassle, they bought black tires, not brown. An expendable wax is added to the rubber for dry rot protection. As the tires rotate, this expendable wax is pushed to the surface of the rubber to replace what was depleted because of ozone damage, too bad it has to be brown.
That is why I suggest using a good water based product with strong UV protection. You’ll keep your tires looking black and prevent the initial layer of protecting wax on the rubber to be consumed from the ozone because the UV rays will never have a chance to eat away at it.
