Default For those who have had water in their tail lights...

I'm just curious what is the proper way to seal the taillights to prevent water from getting in in the first place? Would the cracking issue be at the top where you open the rear hatch and the top of the tail lights are exposed?

Also I have read where people drill holes in the bottom of the tail lights to let the water drain out and while I understand the thought process I have two questions one being that's not solving the problem and two if you drill holes where does that water go when it escapes through the bottom of the tail light? Could it actually go into the body of the car or will it drain to the outside
