It's happened to me, I screwed in the little rubber feet on the hatch some more and it never did it again.

Last summer on my '99 Formula WS.6, same problem. If you open the hatch you'll notice two black "cups" above each tail light. These cups channel runoff water behind the tail lights and out underneath them. There is a small hole in each at the back closest to you (when standing behind car). I'd say either this small hole has become plugged....or, more likely. What happened to mine was that the fit between the metal and the black plastic cup had loosened to the point that I could lift it up slightly with a fingernail. Water gets in through this new seam and goes directly into the trunk. My solution was to hit the local home hardware for some silicone. Since then I haven't had a problem, and I've just moved to the East Coast.....all it frickin' does here is rain. Hope this helps.

thanks for the help... i hope so too. my girlfriends bag was in the trunk at the time. ruined all her books and stained her bag, but at least her laptop is fine. my main issue is that the car stinks to high heavens from it though im gonna try all your fixes and hopefully one of them will work.
