Default re-painting STB?

i am thinking about buying a hotchkis STB from a guy on the board, but it is red. I would like to have a black or silver one instead. but the price is good, and i dont mind putting in a little bit of time to change the color. but i was wondering how hard this would be. I am assuming the hotchkis would be power coated, so could i just do some light sanding on this finish and paint over the red? or would i need to take it down to the bare metal? polishing it would also be nice, but i know that would take even more time. any thoughts?

I am in the process of polishing my Hotchkis STB and let me tell you it is a TASK AND A HALF!!! I am sure the the end result will be great; however taking that stuff off is a pain in the but. Good luck...

Aircraft stripper should take care of that powdercoating no problem.

Maybe you could have it re-powdercoated? If you could just powdercoat over the red then that would be awesome for you!

what's aircraft stripper and where can i get it?

i wonder how much it would be to have it powdercoated a different color? if i am going to spend much on it, i may as well just buy a new one.

i would like to polish it, but i dont think i want to put that much time into it. maybe i could get it sandblasted.

Why don't you just sand the powdercoat down with some 800 grit paper and then repaint it? There shouldn't be a need to remove the powdercoat unless it is in really bad shape or something.

if there are any scratches or knicks.... feather them out with some 600 grit. Then go over the whole thing with 1000 grit. Then base/clear it with a rattle can.
