Default thoughts on black engine bay in non-black car

hey guys.......

i've been thinking about having the engine compartment painted black but keeping the rest of my car pewter as it sits now. before my SS, i've always been into the classic muscle cars and soooo many of them have black engine bays even if the rest of the car is another color, even white. the tops of the fender lips creep over into the engine bay where they get bolted in and are still the body color, but get masked off from the rest of the bay. the look really seems to make the motor stand out and my engine scheme is going to be mainly black and polished. i'm more than likely going to do it, but i just wondered what you guys think if you understand my explanation. all input is welcome. take a look at the pic below.

thanks,
Dave

Certainly understand the explanation. I think it could look good, and the stock engine bay paint usually isn't finished off really well anyway, so might as well redo it, especially if you're swapping out the engine. Not sure I'd change colors, though I wouldn't have to .

The black looks nice, I did it when i swapped the 305 into my S10, but IMO, the body color looks better. specially in a more modern car.

black is the only color that works being different in the engine bay.. after all back in the day all cars had a black engine bay regardless of the cars color.

Andy's (Xstaz28) blue berger car has a black engine bay.. look very nice..

I have been thinking of doing this in my NBM Z as well. The blue paint in mine doesnt look all that great and was thinking of giving it the classic look as wel... just like you PRAY HRD, I too come from the old muscle cars. I plan on starting the teardown very soon to get ready for Super Chevy in October.

I've been thinking of doing this when I switch over form the 3.4 to the LS1. My buddy did this to his red IROC, I thought it looked good.

I personally think it looks really cool to do the engine bay in black. When I seen Xsta's Berger it was cool to see the black bay. Another route that I think look really good is to paint the engine bay the same exact color as the body and have a nice clearcoat, where as factory is just a low gloss tan color.

*If you do a search for ZL1, Berger or even the Dick H. camaro's they should all have black bays. I would attached those photo's, but they are to large to upload as an attachment. But I did mannage to post up a custom done version

yup, that's exactly what i was thinking too. i do like the body color with clear, but i like the black bay better because (hey, alliteration ) it draws more attention to the motor and turbo setup, which hopefully wont need any help to begin with! thanks for your input and the pics.

Dave

btw...........how's that hood Mad???

I say do it. They made engine bays black for years. I don't see why it wouldn't look good to do it again.

Hey Dave I think you should do it but then again I'm a little bias I filled in all the holes and seams in the engine bay then had it painted black. Car is silver even though it has black body parts on the front.

i'm definately going to fill, smooth, and paint the bay black. great looking pics there dope. hey, how did the fender/hole saw mod work for you? any real differrence weight wise? would you do it again? i saw that APE's car is like that too only more of a rectangular design for the holes.

thanks,
Dave

Not worth the effort IMO. I did the one side and it wasn't even close to a pound. I didn't even bother doing the other side.

I like the engine bay body color. Repainted and cleared, not the stock shade.
