More or less. I started around 2:30PM on Saturday, finished the washing and claybar sessions around 5:30 (but had about 45 minutes taken out because a buddy came over and I bought his wheels). I was beat, so I quit for the night. Got started in on the polish around 11:30AM Sunday and finished everything around 5:00PM. I'm pretty sore today, but it was worth it.

Werd, Menzerna works really good, but it makes any car look metal flaked. After polishing my car with Menzerna SFX-1, SFX-2, and SFX-3... I don't know which one did it, but I now have glitter/metalflake-looking dots ALL OVER my car that you can only see when you look directly where the sun is shining on the spot. It doesn't really bother me since it's only noticable in the right angles, but it's enough that personally I'm not using those polishes again.

Actually, the SFX line is Sonus's line of products. I haven't personally used these, so I can't say one way or the other, but the Menzerna stuff I used enhanced the metallic flakes in the paint without making it look glittery.

Great writeup man, I really liked the step by step pictures. I always wanted someone to do that.

LOL! Happens to the best of us. If that's the worst mistake you make today, consider it a good day.

great write up! i am finally going to try the zaino PC fusion stuff with the Pocrter Cable and an orange pad (as i do have a few pretty hefty swirls in the clear). a write up like this helps out greatly when you are still kind of affraid to mess up the paint. great action shots as well. i will try and post some pics up like chup did but i don't think that i am going to attempt a write up like that. once again, great job!

Looks like a project I need to undertake, your results are amazing!

Please let me know what kind of machine you used and what "pads" you got too.
Never used a machine, is it something a rookie can damage the finish with?

Thanks.

Thanks (not just to you, but to everyone) for the encouragement and compliments. Nice to know I didn't sweat my butt off for nothing.

As for machine and materials used:

Porter Cable 7336 dual action polisher
Zaino Claybar
Claymagic clay lube
Black Magic car wash (before clay)
Meguiars Gold Class car wash (after clay)
Menzerna Final Polish II with a white Lake Country pad
Menzerna Finishing Touch Glaze with a black Lake Country pad
Menzerna FMJ applied by hand with a microfiber applicator (seasoned with some detailing spray)
Menzerna High Gloss Acrylic Spray, buffed out with Dragon microfiber towels

I got just about everything from www.properautocare.com except the car wash and the claybar. As for damaging your finish, the running joke is you'd have to hold the polisher about a foot off your paint's surface and drop it to hurt anything, and it's not far off. I've only been seriously detailing for about a year and a half now. It gets better with practice, but even the first time I used it, I got great results.

If you want more in-depth information, there is a Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher FAQ at the top of this forum. I hear the guy who wrote it is kind of a jackass, though.

Which Porter Cable DA Polisher is the right one to get. I see Chup is using the 7336. And, properautocare.com suggests the 7424. I went out looking for a 7424 last weekend (Lowe's, Home Depot) and couldn't find one. I did see a 7336 at Lowe's. What's the diff?

There isn't a difference. They're the exact same tool, just one is marketed as a sander (7336) and the other is marketed as a buffer (7424). Here's a great link someone else on the board sent me (I'm sorry, but I deleted the PM, so whoever you are...thanks!)

No difference...except for price. I picked up a 7336SP at Lowe's for $99. The SP variant of the 7336 includes both a sanding backer plate and a polishing pad, although you really won't need either piece...I recommend a soft urethane backer plate in case it ever comes into contact with the finish (which does happen in tight areas), it won't cause a scratch...
