Exclamation How to properly R&R the shift boot?

What is the best way to remove and replace the M6 shift boot in an LS1? The factory replacement I just purchased has a plastic ring retainer at the bottom with 5 tabs protruding and it looks/feels a little weak to be bending it's shape alot to pull it out and replace it. Is it necessary to remove the console and release it from the underside?

You can release it from the top, but you need to be careful. But I'm guessing since you bought a new one, the old plastic ring is broken. The side of the ring with the hump in it goes on the passenger front side of the car. It's kind of hard to describe how to remove it from the top, but it can be done. Just play around with it, you should be able to figure it out. But once you get the old one out, just pop the new one in place, which can be done without breaking it.
