Default Darkened/dirty taillight....firebird

I've got this problem with my driver's side tail light that just seemed to develop over last summer. It looks almost black and the light hardly shines through. I've removed it a couple times, soaked it in really hot water and soap which seemed to help somewhat but really didnt do much. Its really apparent and wondering if anyone has had this problem and how to get it clean. The light seems to have a condensation issue so Im guessing its mold/mildew but theres no easy way to clean it ..... any info??

Thanks
Michelle

Very common problem on 98+ birds. My passanger tail light has the same problem. I tried to split the casing but GM used some super epoxy on there. From what I hear the reflective in material inside doesn't clean off once it's stained which is why it looks dark. It basically comes down to having to buy a new tail light.

Thanks for the reply. I kinda thought that about the back up light portion. It didnt appear that whatever it was on there it was going to come off.

Ya I wish it woudl come off, used tail lights are going for $100 on average and a new one is $180.

That sucks . Someone told me now tho that you can put a headlight in the oven at 200 to break the seal and thought the tail light might be the same but I dont think that will work since a headlight is pretty much metal and the taillight is plastic

I wouldn't want to put plastic in an over at 200 degrees personally. If it worked that would be great but I just see the plastic getting distorted and melting/burning in spots.

Just go to a junk yard. I plan on doing that for my passenger side. Probably pick one up cheap there.

Wow, I've never heard of this problem until now. Now I want to go home and check out my taillights to see if I have this problem.

Having the same problem here, and looking for a solution.

One of those eBay links has the dark/dirty mod already on it!

Im the friend that has the same prob. and it kills me everytime I have to look at the tail light, and it is the same side too! I took it off and my and I freind found out that the tail light was leeking water though the egdes of the light. I personaly think it would be better to just buy another one, or just clean it out the best u can and seal the eadges with black silicon.

Yep I had to seal my taillights because they were trapping moisture in them. My passenger side has a small dark spot, didn't catch it on time.
