Default Paint/Repaint question

I wanted to know if a body shop could strip off all wax and wetsand the clearcoat, and then spray multiple clearcoat layers. Can that be done or is that stupid? A friend told me that it would cost just as much as repainting anyway. My clearcoat has some scratches but the paint doesn't so that's the reason I ask. So if one opted to do this instead of professional level polishing to end up getting a "wetter" paint look, does it make sense?

Makes sense as long as there are no chips or anything like that in the paint.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Definitely post the results if you do it. Are you going to have them wetsand the final coat? Or do it yourself? How many extra coats of clear?

I just wanted to know if it could be done. Wonder how much it would cost ... might call around out of curiousity.

Let us know what you find. I'd like to do that. This damn orange peel is killing me and I wouldn't want to wetsand the stock clear and not reapply any.

Okay I called what is regaurded as one of the best body shops/collision repair places today and asked my question. Receptionist said no right off the bat and then passed the phone over. The guy there told me that basically it wouldn't come out looking right. "You're just looking for more depth in the paint?" I said yes. "You'd basically have to go through the whole process of repainting." So I ask how much. "$7-8000."

The person who recently had their pewter SS repainted with some accents looks great and it was $2300 so this figure I was quoted is shocking.

If you just have light scratches and swirling in the paint, you should be concerned with removing those first. That will make the paint deeper, wetter, etc.

What color is your paint?

Black. The one that shows hairline scratches the best!

You should start out by polishing the paint...you may be happy with that.

Where are you located?

Yeah I hear you. But I figured that I would get an immediate result, more protection, and long-lasting shine all the time if there was just more clear on the paint in the first place. I don't understand why this can't be done. But I suppose I could take the word of a body shop. Do you have an opinion on it?

And I keep forgetting to put that stuff under my name. I'm in the SF Bay Area, California.

Several years ago I had the same thought that you're having. After a good amount of research, I found that it's just not practical.

If you're considering spending a fairly large amount of money on paint work, what would a $150 detail hurt to see if you could be satisfied?
