Stupid question about stripes.. I know that this question is dumb, but.... who came with the idea of racing stripes? What are they for? or for more horsepower? 
Don't get me wrong. I like some styles, but I just wan to know how everything started? Le Mans? or the Trans Am series??? What is the purpose??????????

im not sure about where they started, but the ergonomics of them on the cars body makes airflow much smoother and give better aerodynamic, essentially cutting 0.4 seconds off your quarter mile time!

It was just to stand out on the race track. I think it may have been Shelby that did a skunk stripe on one of his cars and it just went on from there. It's just looks. When cars were racing it helped to differentiate the cars or if two cars were done alike so you could tell they were team cars.
