Havent clear coated mine but I think if you clear coat em they're not as bright/reflective as they would be if u just polished them. At least thats what I hear about people clear coating their polished rims.

well i figured that but i was thinking if i cleared them they would stay polished under the clear and i wouldent have to keep polishing them every few weeks
is 500 degree good enough to hold up to the heat?

I clear coated the ones I did on my Camaro, and the shine looks the same. Don't believe ppl who tell you the shine is gone. Def clear coat them to keep them from getting dirty and chewed up. Once you paint them, you want them to remain looking good. Clear coat them keeps them looking good.

thats if the clear sticks to polished metal. theres no "bite" on polished metal as opposed to paint or un-polished metal

I just used masking tapes and taped off everything i didnt want painted...make sure to spray primer first, usually white...then spray your color over that, it will make it stand out and hold up better ontop of primer..i dont know how to take off the caliper, and sand them, all that good stuff...but they still looked awesome just by taping off the area around using newspaper for the bigger areas, then just go spraying....

This is about clearing over polished calipers. I see you're talking about painting them but the thread's not about that.

Anyway, once Firehawk 608 opens his store he said he's gonna sell a sealant for polished metals and chrome to do just this. However it's expensive stuff so you may rather just use clear paint. But I'd like to do my wheels with the stuff he'll sell.

Hmmm, I didnt clear mine. I just wipe em off with a rag every time i wash the car and they look the same as the day I polished them. I havent repolished them either and its been almost 2 years now.
