If you had to choose one or the other, would you get an Autotap or Autometer guages?
I like the Autotap, because you can use it to read almost all vehicle information. The downside is that you have to bring along a laptop every time you want to use it. The software with the enhanced GM parameters is close to $300.
The good thing about the Autometer guages is that they're always there. They're on when the car is on. You don't need to hook up a laptop to read the information. The downside is that 1 guage is only good for 1 type of information; they make a factory interior not look factory anymore; and three guages with the triple-guage pillar pod (along with the professional installation) will cost more than the Autotap software.
I'm leaning more towards the Autotap. What would you choose?

I've seen the guages with the 3 or 4 readouts, but the information they read out aren't that useful to me. I would buy a 3 or 4-in-1 guage if the read outs weren't related only to 1 specific type of information such as air/fuel. If somebody made an all in one guage that included at least transmission temp, water coolant temp, and fuel pressure, then that would be a no-brainer purchase.

IIRC they do make the 4 in one guages with whatever readouts you want, I'll try and find a link
EDIT: this isn't exactly what I meant, but here's one example http://www.aeroforcetech.com/

Autometers are nice and more accurate than factory gauges. I like that they recalibrate everytime you start the car. Plus like you said they are always there and are proven in racing.

I voted autometer. Ive purchased over 20 gauges over the past few years for different cars and projects. I run a full set in my TA, and have a few in my off-road jeep. They never let me down, and I personally always have good luck with their customer service.
As for a "know-it-all" gauge... I vote Aeroforce Tech Interceptor gauge. It will display every single output that the PCM can offer in real time. It displays two read outs at the same time. You can invert the background lighting. Its very slim, and hook up is a piece of cake.
Here is a pic...
It even has a cool logo during start up. Mine is a pontiac logo...blurry pic at night...
The gauge also has two analog inputs, and will record a certain amount of data. It displays DTCs and will clear them as well. Has built in shift lights which I dont use because I have a harlan. Does a bunch of other stuff that I dont even fool with...
It reads plenty of techy stuff... like short and long term fuel trims by bank, knock retard, o2 voltages, all MAF variables... You can go to their site and get a list...
Justin
P.S. saw that someone else linked the site...just figured Ide throw in a couple pictures. Also, someone mentioned they would like to know trans temp, coolant temp, and fuel pressure... It will do trans temp for an auto, and coolant temp is dead on with my autometer gauge that is taped into the passenger side head. It doesnt read fuel pressure. I dont think the PCM taps into the fuel system anywhere to read pressure.
