You might want to check with the local ordinances. I'd say it's a No-No.

I think it depends on the state and the colors you use, there was a guy from michigan that changed the background from blue to red. It didnt look too out of place though. But I'm not sure if he ever got busted for it

Isn't that illegal since the license plate is reflective? If you were to paint over the letters, they couldn't be seen very easily at night.

Well, in Florida, it's absolutely illegal to alter you license plate in any way. It's a misdemeanor here. I don't imagine it's much different in other states, since the plate does not belong to you, it belongs to the state issueing you the tag.

It wont be ok. Even if the colors are dark, you've altered the state issued plate and it'll look like a forgery. Im sure in Cali you'd be pulled over with the quickness for something like that. Stay safe and dont do it.

You could use some reflective vinyl. If you get into trouble it would be very easy to remove.

FWIW If it's going to be a DD you'd be better off to leave the plate alone, or do something subtle (I know I want to get rid of the background on the KS plates, looks like a freaking mushroom cloud) if it's a show only, I think you could get away with more, I've seen plates with louvers punched in, and flames painted on them (among other mods)
It's also going to depend on the laws of your state, some have no specific prohibition on altering your plate (as long as the numbers are legible) others specifically prohibit plate alterations
Like the ads say, check your local laws

****, here in Texas it is illegal to even have a license plate frame! So I'd say that's definitely not legal. If you switch to a color that's fairly close to the normal color, I doubt anyone would say anything. Like if you have blue letters and switch to black, I doubt you'd have a problem.

But I still wouldn't try it.

I wouldn't advise doing this...there is a large bunch of us (myself included) that wouldn't notice or even care about it...hell, there are so many specialty plates these days that it's hard to know what's been altered. However, there is a large sect of the L.E. community that lives for traffic enforcement (aka traffic *****) and would notice and take action on this...in other words, you may be drawing extra attention to yourself. My recommendation would be to either live with the ugly plate or find a specialty plate that looks better on your ride. I went with a DARE plate...not only does it support a great cause, but in PA, it's a mean looking black plate that matches my black SS.
