Default Rollbars... Are they safe for the street?

Didn't know where else to ask this... Here's my question:

I have the same roll bar as is in this pic:

I'd post my own pics but still can't find my camera ...

Anyways, look how close the car comes to your head !!! I'm afraid that if I were rear ended my head could get whipped back into it...

Are these made only for racing when you'd be wearing a helmet? Should I pad it? Any input is appreciated...

Get some padding, thats really the only fix in a situation like yours.

Good Luck.

^^Like the others said, get padding for it plus you will need it for the track if you plan on runnng the car.

This is the issue that Ive been dealing with on my 87. Im 6'4, and the way my car runs, I WILL need a bar/cage at the track. Unless I want to sandbag every race.

All of the pre-fabbed kits seem like they want the main hoop in a position that would be right against my head. So Im trying to figure out a way to install it so that its back far enough for my driving position. At the track I dont mind being up alittle and sitting more straight up. But for daily driving I gotta be comfy.

The only thing holding me from getting a cage kit and having at it is just the fear that I wont be able to make something work the way I want.

Don't skimp on the padding.

I know a guy who has a race car with a roll bar. He was just driving around town normally and got rear ended, not even hard. His head hit the roll bar and he has a lot of trouble talking and walking, its pretty sad.

I'm not an expert here but I think I'd rather be knocked out from hitting the roll bar compared to squashed like a bug in the case of a roll over

Yeah but what are your chances of rolling over vs. just getting rear ended? I'm sure the guy I know thought the same thing and look at him now he can barely string a sentence together.

cars with bars shouldn't be on the street much, but yeah, pad the hell out of it
ive also seen some cages where the top bar is removable (not sure how legal that is)

I take it this is a problem because of your height? If not, and you can avoid rolling with the "gangsta lean" :jester: then maybe you should start there. I'm just saying this because I knew a guy who was like 5'9" and he used to drive with the seat all the way back in his Nova that had a bar, and hit his head on it once. Then again, that kid had nooo common sense.

Pad it, alot.

Some cages mostly more so the "show" cages or 4 pointers I wouldn't run ever, but really if it's safe or not depends on how the cage is setup. You will be at more risk for hitting your body on it but have a safer, legal and hopfully stronger car due to it.

Padding really is the best thing you can do, I know it doesn't look as cool but well function > fashion.

I like the idea of a race helmet everytime you drive the car

keep in mind that roll bar padding was designed to protect a helmeted head from contacting the bar. The main hoop of the rollbar should tuck behind the b-pillar. A lot of off the shelf cages dont do that because theyre designed around the back seats. I personally think that when your at the point of throwing a roll bar in your car your also at a point where having a back seat shouldnt be an option.

In the event of a roll over with the factory belts, the belts will allow your body to be pushed out of the way. Padded or not, if you hit your head on that bar in a roll over chances are good that youll be eating through a straw.
