!Molding = Failure
So I woke up this morning with intentions of removing my side molding and de-badging the Trans Am emblems. I start off by realizing that fishing string is only going to snap. I de-string an old guitar of mine and use the E string to start cutting through the double-sided tape. Comes off easy enough.
I used Goo Gone to get rid of all of the leftover tape, and after over an hour of scrubbing, I realize that my car has been painted over, and that the layer of paint underneath the molding is a different shade of white.
You could clearly see the two different layers of paint. I tried wet sanding the paint to smooth out the layers. No luck. On top of that, there was this grey scum between the two layers of paint. Trying to get that off only ended up in flaking and chipping the paint between layers.
After hours of fighting with this crap, I ended up just buying double-sided tape and putting the molding/badges back on. As if to add insult to injury, the flakes of paint ended up showing up outside of the molding.
What a waste of a day...

i had the same problem with my badges. got some laser cut polished ones that we were gonna put on, so when i took the car to the body shop to have the spoiler put on, i had them pull the stock badges. they ended up leaving some of the stuff they were held on with (wasnt double-stick tape, fenders had been redone when the flames were put on), and also pulling off some of the clearcoat. havent decided what do do with it yet... i kinda like the badgeless look, buti dunno. we were gonna do my moldings too, but we had the same issue you did. we just put them back on.

Yeah I feel your pain, I did the same thing, the passenger side came out perfect, but the driver side on the other hand looks like pure ****. I was pissed, but I have gotten over it. Sorry to hear that dude.

the dam tape took off my paint like 5 heads of a nail wide so not that bad i got chrome mirror z28 emblems that i am going to use to cover that one side but everthing else is ok b/c i have my car in storage and it has some dust on it so now the bodyshop can place them in the exact spot of where they were before kinda like an outline. jsut my 0.02 but that does suck man sorry to hear that. hopefully it all works out well and good luck!
