Sandpaper, a rattlecan of semi-gloss black from Walmart and a little of your time, just a few wrinkled bucks. I did mine a year or so ago and it still looks pretty good.

$115

I originally gave it the rattlecan job, but after about 2 years it started chipping and looking all around pretty shitty. So I took it in to get painted the right way and Im very satisfied.

A rattlecan actually holds up well and looks good? I would think you would need a gun to make it look alright?

I didn't. Its personal preference really. I don't like badges on the back of my car. It clutters everything on the back. I wanted a clean look so I left it all black.

Bondo~~$20
Sandpaper~~$10
Dupont prof. auto paint, gloss black~~$50/pint
Dupont clear~~$60/pint
Paint gun-already own, rent one for ~$20

Spray paint is fine, but if you are going gloss good luck. I think painting gloss without a lot of wetsanding/painting experience would be a headache. If you go flat black, spray paint it all the way. I wanted the smooth, glossy factory look. A little more costly, but gloss black paint out of a gun after 2 coats barely needs any wetsanding at all. After the clear, I touched it with some 1500 and 2000 and she shines like new.
