Default Clay Bar question...

I have had my z28 for about 6 months now and I only hear great things about clay bars. When I purchased the car the hood had what almost looks like dryed wax specs all over. I was just wondering if anybody knows if the clay bar is capable or removing this because it is driving me simply insane, I'm even contemplating painting the hood if not. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Just go ahead and buy a clay bar....you will be surprised by how smooth your paint will feel afterwards. Just make sure to never drop one...because as soon as it hits the ground the dust it comes in contact with will embed itself into the bar and all you'll do is add scratches to your finish.

Take your time, use the supplied bottle of lube (sounds kinda bad) and do one small section at a time. It will take a while, but if you do it properly you won't believe how good the paint will feel after you put some good quality/polish wax on it.

I just did my car again, most of the car wasn't too bad, it's just the rear bumper that collects most of the dirt, and it took me around 5 hours to do the whole car.

Good luck with it!

Use fresh clean car soap when using the clay bar. It takes off alot more and alot safer to use over a large area. And you wont have to worry about the clay sticking to the paint wich is a bitch to take off.

what i do before i clay bar the car is i sweep the floor in the garage and make sure there is no dirt. i would recommend doin that, cuz i dropped the damn bar like 3 times and i had no problems with dirt scratchin the car.

pure luck .. if you drop a clay bar on the ground, even a clean garage floor, it is toast. throw it away and get a new one .. saving a few bucks is not worth it ..

when you use a new bar for the first time, cut it in half, and put the other half away.. so if you do drop it, you still have some to finish the job.

diabloj15 .. clay your hood .. it's worth the time, effort and $$$

I used clay bar for the first time a couple months ago. Very good. The paint was sooo smooth after. I used the clay bar with detailing spray. Be sure to wax the car after because you have removed the wax. So you are going to need some un-rushed time on your hands. If your spots on the hood are really chips in the paint it might not be a cure, but you are still going to like the results.

I have used the magic clay brand bar a lot and it works great. They also have two grades of it blue and red, the red is a little more aggresive but is still safe on for your paint

So is a bucket fo fresh car soap better then the combo of lube and detail spray?

Not necessarily. The detail spray usually has better lubricity, which gives you more work time before you have to re-moisten the surface. The car soap is just more economical, especially if you're re-using the soap you used to wash the car. If you do the latter, be sure to use a rinse bucket (and rinse WELL) to keep your soap bucket as contaminant-free as possible. It will never be perfectly clean, but it suffices well enough as most particles will sink to the bottom.

In sort, if you have it, just go ahead and use the QD spray. And if you run out, the car soap will do.

I used the detail spray before and it just dryed up and wasted it. By using the soap it last longer and covers a large area to get done quicker and removes more dirt safer then the spray in a small area.

The detail spray works alot better after you wax with a micro fiber towel.

I prefer the QD spray for two reasons:

1. you don't have to rewash the car when you are done claying.. just wipe off and go on to the next step .. can't do that if you are using car soap.

2. I have seen the car soap cause the clay bar to break down .. doesn't happen all the time,. but it can .. and then your clay is trash.

Just used Meguiars clay bar on the hood of the wife's honda. Took of some junk that was on there that did not come off in washing.

I went to the Meguiars Detailing 101 class and they reccoment the detail spray over car soap. (why wouldn't they it cost more) but i used the detail spray.
