Default Detail Process: '06 Orange Metallic GTO

The owner contacted me recently to see if could an interior/exterior freshen-up before his departure to a car show/track event out of town this weekend. Typically I don't do this during weekdays but exceptions do happen.

Right now this GTO has a shade over 12k miles on the clock and to my knowledge has never been clay barred previously. The surface appeared to be in decent shape with minimal surface scratches.

The stages of treatment: (20 pictures total)

http://s189.photobucket.com/albums/z...0GTO%20detail/

Quick summary of paint surface treatment:

Wash with Tropi-Care car wash concentrate
Clay Bar with gray mild composition bar
Orange Lake Country CCS foam pad/Swirl Cutter combo with Ultimate Detailing Machine at speed 4-5
Blue Lake Country CCS foam pad to apply TC-3 Polish/Sealant xP at speed 3-4

The "before" with caked on rubber in wheel well area:

Paint meter measurements ranged between 4.5 and 5.5 mils:

With the total surface covering thickness in this range, it would be difficult to do any aggressive technique such as wet sanding to remove excessive orange peel. This includes primer, color and clear coat. To give you an idea of this thickness, 2 sheets of paper would be about 6 mils.

An example of surface contaminants:

I spent most of the time doing this step today. The owner later comments about the difference in appearance of the metallic after today's completion.

Finished for today:

If you look closely, the caked on rubber is still intact in the wheel wells. Ordinarily I don't leave this here but the owner requested it to be left intact there.

Questions/comments welcome.

Sure.

I always enjoy testing out new products, machines and techniques on other cars first.

Steve would you rate that Ultimate Detailing machine better than the pc or do you think the pc is still better. I noticed is did a pretty damn good job on that GTO.

We have shipped to a number of customers on the west coast but we are unable to determine who may be detailing professionals. We'll check to see if we can fine tune our search for you.

I think it's still a little too early to declare a new buffer champion at this time. Only time will tell with its reliability. The black C6 I recently detailed was a good test for the UDM. After completion that day, only remnants of the deepest scratches were still evident.

So far performance, smoother operation at speed and slightly more power are key positives for the Ultimate Detailing Machine.

Why on earth would he want the caked on rubber to remain there?

Car looks great.

Thanks for the comments.

The owner attended an event in Tulsa where we has going to race as well as show the car. He wanted the rubber to be left intact until after the event. I respected his wishes.

Thanks again.

Actually results such as these are pretty common to achieve with either the Porter Cable or Ultimate Detailing Machine. Both are user friendly, won't burn the paint and you'll appreciate the results even more because you made it happen.

Im not a professional detailer but I am a painter. I use a Makita buffer mostly because I need the extra power. I do however do some side work detailing as well as keep my car maintained. Do you think it would be worth it to purchase either the UDM or the PC for the detailing? It does seem to be much smaller and lighter. I also use a Matco 3" buffer for small areas.

Thanks

- Jeff

Jeff:

With your being in business of strong surface corrections, the Makita makes sense for you with the time and speed factor. The UDM and PC are great for minor-moderate surface corrections and last step product applications. You wouldn't go wrong with having either one of them in your arsenal.

I have and use all 3 machines mentioned above and they have their place in the detailing realm.
