35th SS, 30th WS6, etc.. Decals - Removal?
I'm considering buying a 2002 35th anniversary SS with the silver stripes that turn into checker flags. I'm not a big fan of the stripes themselves, about 50/50 on the fence with them. Has anyone here removed the factory stripes from their f-body? Do they just pull right off with no problems?
I'm assuming they are just a vinyl decal, right?

It's just a vinyl decal. It'll peel off. If you're considering removing them I wouldn't even pay the extra $$ for the anniversary version. Just get a regular SS and if you want the stripes you can order them from a third party source (I can get the name for you, can't remember their name offhand) that look identical in form and quality for much much less.

Yes, but since the one I'm looking at is used, I don't have a choice. I also like the two-tone leather and embroidery on the 35ths much better. I'll probably pull off the checker stripes, leave on the black hood insert part, and put some black hockey stripes on it like an SS "should" have (like on my 69).

I noticed you are wanting the hockey stripe and I can't seem to find a place that has a good stripe for my 98 SS Camaro.. To you have any ideas on a place?? I email GMMG, inc. and they were the ones that did the hockey stripe on the "hot rod" Camaro, but sense they are licensed with Tom Henry that they do not sell the stripe out right.. Please HELP I am wanting that stripe really BAAAD!!!!

Depending on how much time the car has spent outside with the nice UV rays beating down on it, you may have a still have the stripes if/when you pull them off. I've seen some cars that have removed stickers, etc. and you have a nice outline of where the rest of the paint faded but the paint where the stickers were covering remained protected. Since its such a new car, I doubt it, but something you may want to consider.
On a side note, the 35th SS stripes took some time to grow on me, but I really like them now. I'm even painting my '67 Pro Street car with the same color and stripe combination. Just like the hockey stripe on your '69, it's part of the heritage. You wouldn't remove ZL-1 or Yenko emblems because you wanted a smoother look on your car. Just my humble opinion.

yeah, heat gun and a lil bit of patience w/ the elbow grease will take 'em right off. Just be carefull tho, as that you will probably have the "line" still of the graphic. But, use some wax/polish, over the whole area, and hopefully it wont be THAT noticeable over time.
Good luck

i work for a graphics company, and while we don't do many cars(although we did do a '98 C5 like a commemorative Z06 ) we do semi truck/trailer lettering. The fading of the paint is the biggest problem. Removal isn't so hard if you do decide to go through with it. Like others have said, a heat gun and some time. When you go to pull it off though, pull away from the direction the stripe is coming up, as if you were trying to pull it tighter. if you pull it as if you are ripping open a present, it has the tendency of leaving more glue then if you remove it theway i suggested. this is what our vinyl graphics usually do, and it also depends on the type of vinyl material was used(there are quite a few types)
I say leave it on. Being a red car, and especially in houston area, i would think there is quite a few around that are just plain. having the 35th striping, sets your car apart from the others. just my .02

Tony,
If you decide to go with the hockey stripes, I can hook you up with my buddy Jason , that did my 35th and checkered flag side stripes. He can do pretty much anything you need and he's more than fair. That's what he does for a living. Just let me know. Take care.
