Default What to do th400, t56, built 4l60E

Ok, I am hoping to get some opinions on what I should do with my car. I believe my tranny isn't goin to last much longer behind my current motor and have contemplated a few different paths that I might go this winter. It is a mostly street driven car, though not much on the highway with 3.73 rear gears. I am wanting something reliable that can take a large amount of tq, I will be pulling the motor out also and don't mind putting effort into converting. Also I'm a grad student and am wanting to do this as cheap as possible. Any ideas?

+1 on TH400. I'm a little biased though. I broke my T56 and went to a TH400 and a 4000rpm stall myself.

i think my build might be little more mild thansome of yours...around 380hp and 400tq i believe i will be around there after a cam upgrade which Ill be doin at the same time. How much did your th400 conversions cost you?? I'm thinkin it might be cheaper that route as I would also have to get a rear if I went with a t56

I am also thinkin about the TH400 conversion. I know that the T56 can take a pounding but it also breaks more **** and I think in the end will cost you more money + replacing the clutch often. Im also not sure how to do it but I have an idea. Some good sites I found are:

if its not your daily and your wanting to make it reliable yet strong on the quick and cheap.. TH400 is also my vote. it will suck on the highway though.. ask me how i know.

i too am a college student kickin around the same thoughts.. to me the IDEAL setup would be a turbo 400 witha gear vendors overdrive.. too bad thats like a 5K dollar setup.. ill have to wait till i graduate lol

I'd stick with the 4L60E, I'm guessing that's what you have now. It can be made strong enough, but just a little bit more $$$ than the th400, yet it's still good on the highway. I'd contact some of the sponsors on here. Speaking of the 4L60E: The level 1 upgrade at peformabuilt is only 1440 dollars. Good for 500RWHP. FLT has a level 3 at 1650 i think. Not sure what they rate the hp at though.

Personally if i have to upgrade i'd get the one that is good for 700rwhp just to be on the safe side for a little more money.

yea I'm honestly still right in the middle I could go either way...I do kinda have an itch to do something alil different and might go the t56 route if I can find a setup relatively cheap
