Default Built 4L60E or TH400 Swap???

Well, I am pretty much at the point where I am now debating to go with a built 4L60E, or just swap a TH400, me having to buy a trans member, and getting my driveshaft shortned, or losing the OD gear does not bother me. From the stand point of which one will take more of a beating, and better performance I am thinking the TH400 due to me being able to get a trans brake. What do you guys think?

I would go with the 4l80e, all the strength of a 400 plus overdrive.

Yeah, but for cost wise the Th400 is way cheaper to get rebuilt, to put a brake on, etc. Way more shops deal with Th400's

What kinda of power are we talking about? That will have a lot to do with how long you would expect one to hold up. 400 are great trans but no 4th gear on the street gets a little old after awhile.IMHO

I'd like to keep overdrive is why I've pretty much decided that my tranny move will be an 80E, but if not I'd get a built 350.. why the 400 over the 350?

True but for those that actually drive there car the savings on the build would quickly be wiped out with additional fuel cost

This is very true, but this is not my daily, and is more geared towards the track. I don't mind losing OD at all, as long as it will perform better.

I would go with the built 4L60. You say it will be more of a street/strip car, but unless its on a trailer you still have to make that haul to the track. It would get old driving that thing further than just down the street.

I drive mine daily with my TH400 setup and it doesn't bug me at all. Especially with all the darn speed camera's here in AZ it keeps me honest, lol.

I was told that the weight of the car have a lot to do with it. If you have a near stock weight F-Body you might want the 400 but if you are light you can use the 350. I might be wrong but that's what I have read so far.

How much does a 80e weigh compared to a TH400? Does it take any more power to turn?

The drivability doesnt bother me, I used to drive a 70 chevelle with a th400, reverse manual valve body, purple hornies, 12-bolt, 4.10 gears, and a spool it didnt bother me. I am very lax on the "street" sense of things and if I go to the track I have no problem trailering it out there. What I am looking for is what trans will be the best to make me go the fastest.

I know a th400 is far lighter than a 4l60e. I'd imagine it takes less power to run a TH400 than a 4l60e also, but I'm not sure. I know their cheaper to build, especially as far as valve bodies/brakes go.

NO I do believe 400 weigh more. I believe I lost A little power when I made that move. th400 are very strong and take a lot of abuse and then some. But if it were me I would go 4l80 because of the extra gear, lockup etc. I am making that move this summer.

I don't know where you got your facts. My TH400 weighs 139lbs wet. A 4l80e is 255lbs wet.
