Default Turbo350 in a 67 camaro LS1

Swapping an LS1 into my 67 camaro with a turbo 350 trans.
Ok I used the search and found most of the answers as far as flexplates adapters etc.. The one thing Iam having a hard time finding is what the VSS is actually needed for. Is this just for the speedometer or does the PCM use this for something else. In other words if I use a mechanical speedo do I need to worry about not having the VSS on the turbo350?
Thanks in advance

The VSS will be needed if you are using a computer to control the transmission.

You do not need a vss if you are using a mechanical speedo.
