Default OD lockup hits pretty hard?

i have noticed that when my car locks up in OD it hits pretty hard. its not like hard such that something is broken. it just feels like a very firm shift. i have a performabuilt tranny with a yank PT3800 stall. it very well may be a tuning issue but we could not seem to fix it. any suggestions?

Actually we disable PWM and make other mods to improve lockup clutch engagement, It should indeed feel almost like a firm gear shift and will be more notable with high stalls locking at lower speeds. The lockup clutch in the trans is like any clutch reducing apply slippage will increase its life.

I usually drop a few tenths and gain 2 mph locking converter at 90mph

Well a 3800 stall is a high and your locked rpm at that speed would be quite low where unlocked the rpm would be hovering at 3200 or so in 4th so it would would be a considerable drop and I imagine a little agressive feeling sorta like slipping the clutch on a manual then suddenly popping it.
Should be fine as far as not hurting anything. Raising the LOCKUP speed would put the unlocked to locked RPM closer and make it much less noticable however.

How many miles on it approx?
I have just over 1000 on my converter and the lock up is getting less brutal. I think it just needs to break in.

hey frank, do you have any pictures of one of your converters cut open that show the size of the lock up clutch?

Hmm I have for the smaller converter some where but I dont think I do for the new billet style which is considerably larger.
I will see what I can get monday if I get to go over to the shop.

i only have a couple hundred miles on my trans/stall. like i said, it doesn't feel like anything is broken. it just feels like a solid shift. thanks for the input.
