i would like to install a Transgo HD2 shift kit. if i do this, can i reverse it back later? i've never installed one, so i don't know what has to be done.

You can parially reverse it, The holes drilled in the plate are permanent unless you change the plate or some of the kits have a plate with them
Question is why would you want to.

i wanted to make every change to my car reversible, in case the need were to arise to change things back. just trying to think ahead.

For the minimal cost of the kit vs the time and effort to install / uninstall it, it's just not worth it

I try to do the same for my car, but I strongly suggest you are overthinking this particular change. First, physically and visually you cannot tell the kit is there. Second, it is such an improvement over stock that I would never consider going back to stock. JMHO.

how much of a time commitment is it to install one of these? and are there any drawbacks?

Having never installed one before, give yourself 4 hours from start to end. It's not difficult at all, just pay very close attention to EXACTLY what you have removed, and how it fit before you removed it. There is a little grinding involved for installation of the hd-2 kit (nothing major)...so have a bench grinder handy.

Once you have installed it, there is absolutely no reason to go back, IMHO. Stage 2 firmness works best for most people. Also, once you have done this install, if you were to install another one on another car...it would probably only take you an hour to complete. You know how it goes....the first is always the hardest one...'till you figure it out.
