Default TC / Flexplate Gap

I have a 3/8" gap b/w converter pad and flexplate on my TH400. How many 7/16" washers should I use to fill?

You may want to consider another flexplate. Although you'll be able to shim the converter, the converter hub may not be in the pilot of the crankshaft.

won't know if hub goes into crank snout until I know the proper shim thickness...

You would need 4 SAE shims per bolt. They are about .060" each. That will get you down to ~.125" clearance. 4 Shims @ .060" each add up too .250", be very careful with correct pilot engagement. I would suggest getting a .250" spacer to eliminate having so many shims per pad.
