Default th350 transmission problem

Hey guys, I just got done putting a TH350 in my car and its having issues. I got it used, but with low miles on it (around 3500 I believe) and it always worked fine for the previous owner. Its got a rmvb with a trans brake, and fully buuilt, upgraded sprag, etc. What happpens is the trans seems to go into every gear, so I dont think its a linkage adjustment proble,, but when you first drive off its in first gear, shifts to second and third fine. Then when you come to a stop and try to downshift back to first, you have to go to nuetral, then back to first, otherwise it stays in second. Im stumped.

Sounds like you have some slack in the shift linkage or cable . When you go past the position and then back you are taking up slack !!

ok, I think i found the issue. I dropped the TCI pan because I need to tap it this week for my trans temp sensor. Well there was a bolt loose in the pan. So i found the location and put it back. Its at the tip of the screw driver here:

Any info on what this plate is for???? Could it have caused my issue???

well i was talking to a few trans builders, and they said that sometimes depending on the valve body, that plate seperates the fluid passages, so it could have caused a leak and caused the no first gear. We will see though. Ill get some interior pictures here sometime.
