Default Th400 lower than 60E?

So I am almost done with my TH400 install and I have a slight issue. It seems that the TH400 tailshaft hangs down lower than the 60E did. With the driveshaft in it hits the driveshaft loop on the bottom of the loop. Also to get the driveshaft in I have to loosen the torque arm crossmember and let the driveshaft loop come down some so that I can get the driveshaft yoke in the transmission. I have the TH400 crossmember that Eric at Midwest Chassis sells. I also noticed that the cable for the shifter is pulled very tight when the transmission is down on the crossmember where with the 60 it was never tight like that. If I jack the tailshaft of the trans up an inch or so all these issues go away, the cable is loose, the driveshaft goes in and does not hit the driveshaft loop. Is this normal for this to be like this? Should I Just space the transsmission up some off the mount to put it up higher? Thanks in advance.

I would use a spacer and raise the trans up some.

If you need to raise it about an 1" id use 1/2" spacer where the mount bolts to the trans and 1/2" to the cross member.

I will do that if I raise it. I more just want to know if anyone else has had to do this? I am worried that there is something else going on but I don't know what it could be. Other than this the install went very smoothly. I almost wonder if I got the wrong crossmember from Eric at Midwest Chassis.

Nah, your crossmember is fine. I had the same issue with the bmr crossmember, I think the th400 just sits lower than the 4l60e. My loop is welded to my bmr extreme torque arm cross brase that goes from sfc to sfc so there is no movement in it and the driveshaft wasn't even close to making it into the tranny. I didn't think it was a good idea to move the angle of where the tranny sits so I just sawzawed my loop off and I had no other fitment issues. Now I just need to have the loop welded in the new location.

You would think though that the cross member makers would take the fact that they sit lower into consideration and build them so that they sit the same level as the 60E. Its just not natural for a transmission to sit that low I don't think.

Yeah, I think they make the crossmember to have the tranny where it should sit. It may not actually be sitting lower, it might just be a lower tail shaft on the th400 and I would think having the correct angle is more important than where the actual tranny sits. If you raise the tail shaft to be where the 4l60e was, you may be putting the th400 at a different angle than it should be. Of course I'm just guessing so it would be better to hear it from a transmission specialist. What I do know is mine was the same as yours so that's the way they are made/designed. I don't see why they would design the crossmember to have the tranny sit in the wrong spot and then need to use a spacer.

Well I got a PM back from Eric at Midwest Chassis and basically he told me they do make them just a little bit lower so that people can shim the transmission so they can get the driveline angle they want. He said if I want it higher to just shim it up a bit.

Interesting, I would of had to shimmed mine about an inch which seems like a lot. I'll have to check my angles, I'm guessing they are ok though since I just dynoed 800rwhp and didn't break anything. Good info to know though just incase I do want to change the angle.
