Default 4l60e= toasted!

so heres the story, tranny lost 3rd and 4th gear, i have a local builder, been in the buisness for 28 years, has done many 4l60es. he said he can build me a tranny that will hold up to 600 horse, for 650 dollars. is this a deal? he said he will put a shift kit in it, i got a 3600 stall goin in it, and a tranny cooler, do u guys think this is a good deal, and is there anything else that would be good for the tranny? thanks in advance

Sounds like the deal really we could not even get close to that and build a good unit and actually make enough for lunch when done. Seriously make sure hes willing to stand behind it really .

You know the old saying, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Good luck.

Be suspicious, that would barely cover a good rebuild kit & shift kit, much less any other upgraded parts. Then you have to consider that rebuilding a trans has a decent bit of labor involved, they take some hours to dissasemble, clean, and reassemble. And we still havent touched removing or installing it in a car....

My bet is it's a bargain basement rebuild kit + shift kit, if not a rustolium rebuild... His skills, I have no idea. Poor assembly can ruin the best parts, much less cut rate ones.

Doesn't add up.

the price is just strictly for the rebuild, not for installation and removal. he said he uses his parts from transtar, i plan on knowing what goes in it, the thing is i have asked around and everyone tells me to go to him.

Transtar isnt bad but for a rebuild it is a little cheap from where we im at. But usually here rebuilds run $800-1500 it all depends on the shop and the builder.

in aggreeance with Frank thatis a little cheap on my personal builds i spend close to 900 bucks on parts alone for that level of build, thats not labor also....This s kinda like everyone can build a 800 hp motor for 1500 bucks also but in reality it isnt gonna happen I would be leary about that. In this business cheaper isnt what you want. becuase skimping is not going to hold the power. figure master rebuild kit 120 ish, Beast sunshell 60ish, HD sprag 50 , HP band 30-60, decent shift kit 98, some kind of upgraded 3-4 pack 30-60, these are just the basics fihure we are already at close to 500 bucks and there is alot more thats needed to make it reliable at that kinda flywheel power. From expereince whatmostofthe guys that do this kind of rebuilds are expecting that you wont have enough tractionto be able to break the cheap parts they put in them and it will last beyond the warranty they give you. Alot of times these trannies are nothing but a junkyard tranny with a rear case bushing a band and a 3-4 pack maybe a stock sprag also. They willhave at most 150 bucks into the tranny sure ill sellthose all dayfor 650 lol...If he can build them reliable for that theni want his number cause i am gonna sub mine out lol.
