Default hard first shift..? problem?

In the past i drove an m6 car. i recently picked up a 95 z28 with an a4. my concearn is that when the trans shifts from first to second it is a very hard shift where as the rest are smooth. dont get me wrong i like the quick shift just want to make sure nothings wrong. the guy i picked it up from didnt really know what had been done in the past, could it be a shift kit?

i would say it's a good thing, they shift pretty firm from the factory, but not really sure how firm you're talking, if its not slipping in any gears run the **** out of it
