Default 4l60e won't shift out of 3rd gear

Rebuilt engine and trans and have about 140 miles on each. Was dyno tuned and ran fine except that the car would not idle when it was cold, as soon as it warmed up it ran great, no surge and good idle and shifted great. I was out driving tonight and the SES light came on and the trans would not shift our of 3 gear. It starts from a dead stop in 3rd and won't shift out of it. Got any ideas. Is my new trans shot?

No you are in limp mode. Get the code number and I will tell you what you need to do.
Also is the converter stock?

Thanks for the info. I am running a vig converter and it's around 3600 stall.I check the fuses and plugs (where are the fuses located) , if that's not it I'll reset it and get a code and drive it over to my friend shop tomorrow to see what code it's throwing.

^Are you running a trans cooler for that higher stall? It could just be getting hot and the computer is going to limp mode to be safe. It feels the tranny is in danger. So it engages into 3rd, pulls timing, and adjusts line pressure to save it. Shut it off, let it cool down, sometimes this works, although your SES light will still be on.

My car does the same thing, but i also don't have a tune. Code may be 0757. Shift solenoid "B" Stuck on. If you aren't running a cooler, i highly advise getting one. And also it wont hurt anything, just don't rod it and stay at a cruising speed.

you just need that code shut off, it relates to excessive slip from the torque converter. The computer thinks that the stock converter is in there and its slipping too much which puts it out of the programmed threshold of what is acceptable amount of slip. Since you change the converer it slips a ton more than a stock one would hence limp mode. Simple to fix it, just have the code shut off and you will be good to go.

Sorry to bring this up from the dead but I am having the same problem. I have PO757 as well and about 50% of the time I am stuck in 3rd gear. There is a 50/50 chance it seems like that when I start the car it will be perfectly fine, or it will be stuck in 3 gear. I have a 3800 VIG stall with no tranny cooler.

I was planning on replacing the A and B shift solenoids and the harness ($55 in parts). Also I have heard varying opinions on just turning the code off.

I have been driving around in D and have had no issues so far. Anyone know why this is?

But then why does D fix it?

Code is coming and going? Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about trans issues will chime in.

Code comes and goes when I am in OD. Transmission will be stuck in 3rd about 50% of the time (sometimes simply restarting the car will make it work like normal). If I keep it in D, then I have no issues.

If you have a stall you will need to remove the test for that code in order to fix its its not a real fault but rather the PCM being confused over the stall.

Removed the code, still happens. Still have no issues driving around in D but its getting to be annoying avoiding highway.

Mine has been doing the same thing for the last couple years. Shutting the car off for 20 or 30 seconds, then restarting it, has always resulted in the tranny resuming proper operation......so far.

The first step in fixing any transmission "problem" is fixing all engine related codes as some of these codes cause the trans to go into Limp mode.

on the 99 chevys I have had to replace the pcm, (they need to be flashed for VIN) they have a tendency to go bad and will give you codes like that, all coil packs bad or all oxy sensors reading too low, , If you know the coil packs are good ,(it runs) ,, may want to consider PCM , the shift solenoids do go bad and will throw a po757 code which will set the light sometimes but other times not, If you are stuck in 3rd that is limp. they are easy to replace , just drop the pan and about $15 each
