Default Swap fluid level

I just completed the mechanical portion of my L59 (5.3) 4L60E swap into a 69 Firebird. I cranked up and ran for a good 10-15min, then took it for a 5-10min drive around the block. Once I got back I check the trans level and was shocked!! Nothing was on the dipstick. I wound up adding nearly 4qts! Now it's in the cold range at idle.
It seems to shift ok through the gears.
Could I have done damage by being that low...in this short gentle drive around the block?? How much does it take for them to start getting damage?
The Trans is brand new (400miles) out of a 06 Silverado.

is the dipstick correct for the trans? kind of hard to believe it would move with 4 qts low-i know sometimes one side of the dipstick looks high, the other low-your prob alright, esp if it seemed to shift ok w/o slipping
