Default how to replace broken shifter cable?

Well, I managed to break my shifter cable while dropping my trans to install my converter. That makes 2 now, as I broke one on my Buick T-Type doing the exact same thing! That bracket has a mind of it's own, and will grab anything that gets near it! I was lowering the trans and didn't see it was hooked till I heard the crack.

This might be easy, but I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone has any tips about getting the console opened up to disconnect the cable at the shifter. I don't want to break anything else trying to fix it. Car is a '99 z28. Thanks.
