Default 4L60E Firm 1-2 shift, lazy 2-3 HELP!

This is a 4L60E trans behind a 5.3L. The trans has a fairly firm 1-2, but extremely smooth/lazy 2-3...in fact you can barely feel it. It slipped on me for the first time in 3 under WOT after a VERY lazy 2-3 and I've been spooked to drive it ever since.

I pulled the pan tonight and I can tell the clutches have been slightly burned because there is a very light black film on the bottom of the pan. I just don't know if it's time for a rebuild or if it just needs some adjustment.

The trans still shifts thru all gears and hits lock-up fine even during mild acceleration, so I don't think I done anything catastrophic...but I could be wrong.

Any ideas?

Thanks! This is basically a stock 5.3L with a tune, so I'm not sure why I'm having problems unless the trans has already had some wear...

I had a tranny do the same thing and I instaled a transgo shift kit and servos. It lasted until I sold it. Go with the transgo hd2 kit and sonnax servos

Thanks I'll look into that. I have heard good things about the transgo shift kit. I take the trans. to my mechanic tomorrow so I'll find out more then...I may end up doing just that.

It's possible you have a broken 1-2 accumulator spring(s). This is why the 1-2 may be firm. The 2-3 is probably soft from excessive miles or worn frictions. It is true you can drill out the 2-3 feed hole, but you must first find out what servo you have as not to drill the hole too big and cause a VERY firm shift. NEVER adjust the PCS solenoid. It is better to "tune" the trans. If you have lots of miles on this trans, you may be putting a bandaid on it. If you have the means, rebuild it with the HD-2 kit and the proper updates.

Good Luck.

Okay more clues...the transmission is making a noise in drive @ idle. I can't make it out. It almost sounds like pump cavitation...kind of a random growling that I can't quite make out. It doesn't do it in park or neutral.

Also Here are the pressures I read with a gauge tied to the pressure port.

Park - 60psi
Reverse @ idle - 90-100psi
Revrerse with part throttle - 150-200
Drive - 60psi...@ idle
1-2 shift driving @ mild throttle - 100
1-2 shift driving @ half throtte - 125-150
2-3 same as 1-2
3-4 shift @ mid to half throttle 175psi
cruising in about any gear it is 60psi
mid throttle in about any gear is about 100-125psi

Anybody have any ideas??? This is a stock trans with the line pressures boosted about 10-15psi through the tune. I'm getting a really mushy 2-3 shift and a strange noise in drive @ idle. I may just need to go through it, but really can't afford the $1600 right now...

1600 bucks ? just grab a used one and throw it in, you are better off

not to many people know how to properly rebuild an automatic transmission.
the used auto's from the junkyard that i installed have outlasted the mister transmission built ones.

Ask around at local shops if they do rebuilds.
Got my transmission rebuilt with strengthened parts and a transgo kit.

How many miles on the transmission?
The 2-3 shift can be tricky and is where the really good builders can make a huge difference. If I remember right you have a band release and clutch engagement at that shift. Release too soon and you have a flare, or slow shift. Too fast and you can bind it up between two gears and once. Hard feeling shift but really only abusing your hard parts. If it is a high mileage tranny don't bother trying screw with it. Begin saving up your pennies for a tranny build by someone who really knows what they are doing. Supporters on this board all have a great reputation and come highly recommended.

the 3 and 4 clutches are the weak point of the 4L60e. If you want to do it yourself check out raptor trans. website you can buy all the parts and rebuild manuals plus there is alot of good info on it. you should put the z- pack or the upgraded blue clutches in it. but if you just visit that web site it will tell you all kinds of stuff.

What is the website for raptor trans? I'd like to check it out and I'm not finding it.

Sonnax has fantastic books and parts to correct the 1-2 and 2-3 shift problems and try a billet servo it corrected both the shift issues on my 04 after the dealer rebuilt it 6 times in 30,000 miles

The noise you talking about sounds like a bearing in the converter (not uncommon) as far as the shifting problem goes it sounds like the 3-4s are on there way out.Is it high mileage? Has the problem been progressively worse? Is the fluid burnt? It sounds like the trans is worn out.
